Biography of Alberta Ama Oduraa Quartey

February 26, 2000 – June 17, 2023

Alberta Ama Oduraa Quartey was born 7:45PM on Saturday, 26 February 2000 at Korlebu, Accra Ghana after scary incident. Her pregnancy led her mother to discover she had fibroids and the prognosis was she had a 50 – 50 chance of survival at just about 2 months of conception. With prayers and declaration of faith, her birth was deemed a miracle especially after checking all her features and everything was intact.

Oduraa did not speak early due to multiple languages she was exposed to until she started school at 1 year 7 months old. She was a very reserved child, expressing very little. She started her pre-school at Bugain School at Community 20 and later moved to Ann Lisa School and finally GETSA now known as Rising Sun Montessori. At GETSA, teachers asked me few times to confirm hers and her younger sister’s ages as they felt they behaved more maturely than what they told them. Oduraa was very protective of her younger sister especially having been told not to hit her. I heard “If not that mummy said I shouldn’t hit you” several times until one day, their mother asked her to beat her younger sister back while she moderated. That ended the hitting but brought to light how obedient she was even at the face of bearing hitting from her younger sister.

Oduraa passed her BECE excellently and proceeded to Mfantsiman Senior High School. Mfantsiman changed Oduraa to become outspoken, stating her opinion openly but in a respectful manner. Oduraa was the head of JYC (Judah Yahweh Crew). She led her musical group to replace their music box by leading the drive to raise money for it – Oduraa designed a form which she brought to ICGC calvary Temple, tasking Teens Chapel’ facilitators, her mother’s friends in the church and within her professional circle in 2016.

From SHS 1 to SHS 2, she kept saying, “mummy, I don’t know what I want to do in the future” and that was always met with “there is no rush, keep praying, I am sure you will know, keep praying”. It was therefore not a surprise when in her SHS3, she called home with excitement saying now she knew what she wanted to do, “Telecommunication Engineering” and she want it done at Kwame Nkrumah Science and Technology (KNUST). The mother decided to take both admission forms for University of Ghana and KNUST, playing it safe. She passed her WASSCE excellently and was very optimistic she would go to KNUST. Admission from University of Ghana came first for Computer Engineering while she was at Ultimate Credit Solutions for her  internship. When she was informed, she was so disinterested until two days later, that of KNUST came through. And that started her journey at KNUST.

She started with the children church at ICGC Calvary Temple up to the Teens Chapel. The yearly Camp and Teens Chapel helped in her formative years, grounding her in her faith. While writing her BECE, she would pass by church for service after school – this was solely her decision as her mother often travels. Yet she was able to manage her time well enough not to have it impact her studies.

She was a member of the Teens Choir and graduated as the overall best teen in 2019. One of her prizes was a Bible which she kept until her passing with lot of markings and side notes that are both thought provoking and amusing. She writes her prayer points in so much details.

AT KNUST, she ended with second class upper at the end of her first year and was broken because one of her prayer points in SHS was to graduate with a first class. She was so determined that she drew a study timetable (which she mastered to later support other

students with) for her second year resulting in her not coming home for Christmas. According to her, she would be distracted. She worked with the guidance of her academic supervisor and attained first class at the end of her second year. She also won the most improved student same year and after that, there was no stopping her. She knew what she wanted and put in the work with prayers. One of her mantras was, “write down what you want, work towards it and pray about it”.

Whilst at KNUST, she started her business, OD’s Kitchen where she prepared delicious dishes, saved money and partly supported herself and her sister. She saved to pay for all the application fees for the universities she applied to. Upon graduating, she took upon herself not to take money from her mother but rather spend from whatever she earned, as she has quite a number of remote jobs.

Oduraa had the sensitivity of looking beyond the surface to identify people’s needs and set out to meet them without discussing it with them.

Oduraa left Ghana on 10th August 2022 to pursue her PhD at University of Clemson in South Carolina, US. As usual she kept her mother and sister updated on all her doings. On Father’s Day, Sunday, 17th June 2023, she left with other Ghanaian PhD students to visit Twin Waterfalls. They got there, took some photographs and videos she shared with her mum and sister whilst there. On their way back, a tired lady driver drove into their car and she died on the scene of the accident.

Oduraa’s prayer books from Mfantsiman’ days up until 17th June 2023 brings to light her secret thoughts, drive and passion – most ended with “You must be glorified Lord” or “Your perfect will Lord” or I don’t want to bring a reproach to Your Name” or “I must excel” or I must break the status quo. They clearly showed God was important to her.

Oduraa was passionate about her faith, music, excellence, her mother and younger sister, KNUST, Ghana and Africa.

May her beautiful soul continue to rest in her Maker.
